Advanced Treatment for Adhesive Capsulitis (Frozen Shoulder)
A Frozen Shoulder, professionally referred to by orthopedic surgeons as Adhesive Capsulitis, is a debilitating condition characterized by severe pain, progressive stiffness, and an agonizing loss of normal glenohumeral joint mechanics.

Statistically, Adhesive Capsulitis occurs in about 2% of the general population. It most commonly targets individuals between the ages of 40 and 60, presenting with a significantly higher prevalence in women than in men.

Understanding Your Shoulder Anatomy
Your shoulder is a highly mobile ball-and-socket joint comprising three structural bones:
  • The Humerus: Your upper arm bone, featuring a spherical head.
  • The Scapula: Your shoulder blade, which provides a shallow socket (the glenoid fossa).
  • The Clavicle: Your collarbone, which anchors the upper limb system to the torso.
In a healthy shoulder joint, the spherical head of the humerus fits cleanly into the shallow socket. A strong, flexible envelope of connective tissue—called the shoulder capsule—completely surrounds and stabilizes the joint. To ensure smooth, frictionless gliding during movement, the capsule is constantly lubricated by an active flow of synovial fluid.

The Pathophysiology of "Freezing"
When Adhesive Capsulitis takes hold, the structural environment deep within the glenohumeral joint undergoes a destructive, inflammatory shift:
  • Capsular Thickening: The flexible shoulder capsule loses its elasticity, actively thickening and tightening around the humeral head.
  • Adhesion Formation: Stiff, rigid bands of dense scar tissue—called adhesions—develop across the joint spaces, literally "gluing" the capsular folds together.
  • Loss of Hydration: Synovial fluid production drops drastically, draining the joint of its natural lubrication and leading to painful mechanical friction.
The Hallmark Sign
The undeniable indicator of true Adhesive Capsulitis is a severe restriction in both active and passive range of motion. This means you are completely unable to lift or rotate your arm on your own, and a practitioner cannot move it for you either—the joint is physically locked.

During the initial "Freezing" stage, pain increases gradually while joint mobility rapidly deteriorates. This painful, highly inflammatory phase typically lasts anywhere from 6 weeks to 9 months.

The Rivers Myoskeletal Non-Surgical Solution
Traditional medical management frequently relies heavily on invasive cortisone injections, long-term pharmaceutical reliance, or aggressive surgical manipulation under anesthesia.

At Rivers Myoskeletal, we utilize an advanced, multi-directional capsular release protocol designed to break the cycle of immobility non-surgically.
By applying precise, hands-on mechanical traction and specialized soft-tissue decompression, our clinical therapy directly targets and safely separates those deep, adhered capsular folds. This targeted release instantly reduces severe joint fixation, softens dense scar tissue matrices, and restores the natural "slide and glide" mechanics of the arm.

Our specialized, non-invasive procedures allow clients across the Sunshine Coast to safely reclaim full functional mobility, bypass invasive surgical rooms, and experience rapid, lasting neurological relief

Treatment for TMJ Disorders TemporoMandibular Joint Dysfunction

Targeted Treatment for TMJ Disorders & Jaw Pain

Bringing Lasting Relief to Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Sufferers on the Sunshine Coast

In 1934, ear, nose, and throat physician Dr. James Costen first identified Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMJD)—a group of complex conditions affecting the jaw joints, surrounding facial muscles, and connected cranial nerves.

While the classic signs of TMJ dysfunction are clicking, popping, or sharp pain when chewing, its effects rarely stop at the jawline. Because the jaw is intimately linked to the upper cervical spine, cranial fascia, and nervous system, TMJ issues can trigger widespread discomfort throughout the head, neck, and whole body.

🚨 Symptoms Associated with TMJ Dysfunction:

  • Jaw & Facial Pain: Painful clicking, popping, locking, or clenching of the jaw.
  • Headaches & Migraines: Suboccipital tension, forehead tightness, and chronic migraines.
  • Ear & Sinus Issues: Tinnitus (ringing in the ears), ear fullness, sinus congestion, and recurrent ear pain.
  • Neurological & Cranial Strain: Trigeminal Neuralgia, Bell’s Palsy irritation, and facial nerve sensitivity.
  • Airway & Sleep Disruptions: Mouth breathing, sleep apnoea flare-ups, and difficulty swallowing.
  • Systemic Fatigue: Chronic neck stiffness, poor sleep quality, loss of focus, and irritability.

🧠 What Causes TMJ Dysfunction?

TMJ issues often stem from hidden mechanical or postural chain reactions, including:

  • Sacral & Pelvic Imbalances: Falls or injuries to the lower spine (sacrum) that force the spinal column and cranial bones to compensate.
  • Whiplash & Head Trauma: Sudden acceleration forces straining the upper neck and jaw muscles.
  • Postural Strain ("Text Neck"): Long hours sitting at desks or looking down at screens, causing forward head carriage that pulls the jaw backward into compression.
  • Orthodontic Strain & Dental Visits: Keeping the mouth stretched open for extended periods or sudden changes in bite alignment.

💡 The Rivers Myoskeletal Approach to TMJ Relief

Left untreated, TMJ imbalances can lead to chronic joint degeneration, nerve entrapment, and recurring spinal compensations.

At Rivers Myoskeletal, Deke utilizes specialized orthopaedic manual therapy to release deep fascial adhesions around the masseter, pterygoid muscles, and Trigeminal nerve branches. By realigning the jaw joint, decompressing the upper neck (suboccipitals), and restoring balanced cranial mechanics, we help eliminate the root cause of jaw pain without relying on long-term medications or invasive procedures.

Functional Scoliosis responds well to Orthopaedic Therapy!

Told You Have Scoliosis? Why Your Curved Spine Might Be "Functional" (And Reversible!) 🦴✨

Hearing the word "Scoliosis" can sound intimidating. Most people picture permanent bone deformities or spinal fusion surgery—but in many cases, that couldn’t be further from the truth!

As world-renowned bodywork expert Dr. Erik Dalton highlights, scoliosis simply describes a sideways curvature and rotation of the thoracic (mid-back) or lumbar (lower-back) spine. While structural scoliosis involves altered bone shapes, Functional Scoliosis occurs in a structurally normal spine!

🧠 What Triggers Functional Scoliosis?

Functional scoliosis develops when the body creates a temporary "compensatory curve" due to soft-tissue and postural strain:

  • Leg Length Discrepancies: Lopsided hip mechanics shifting weight distribution.
  • Muscular Spasms & Guarding: Deep back and pelvic muscles locking down after an injury.
  • Nerve Entrapment & Pain Compensations: Sciatica or Thoracic Outlet Syndrome forcing you to lean or tilt to relieve pain.
  • Poor Posture & Desk Strain: Habitual slouching creating severe muscular imbalances across the spine.

💡 The Rivers Myoskeletal Difference

Although functional scoliosis is technically temporary, leaving it unaddressed causes tight fascial adhesions to harden. Over time, a functional curve can lead to severe joint wear, rib compression, and chronic back pain.

Having trained in Dr. Erik Dalton’s Myoskeletal Alignment Techniques, Deke at Rivers Myoskeletal applies precise, hands-on protocols designed to:

  1. Release deep muscular guarding and fascial restrictions.
  2. Rebalance pelvic rotation and leg length imbalances.
  3. Restore natural spinal extension and movement patterns before the condition advances.

🗣️ What Our Clients Say:

"For several years I suffered from lower back pain when standing and terrible neck pain due to scoliosis since childhood. After visiting Rivers Myoskeletal, my scoliosis has very much improved, I no longer suffer from pain when standing, and my recovery after work is much faster!"

Fibromyalgia What Is It?

Living with Widespread Pain & Burning Fatigue? It Could Be Fibromyalgia 🌸⚡

If you experience persistent, burning pain spreading across your neck, shoulders, back, and hips—accompanied by deep fatigue and morning stiffness—you know how exhausting daily life can be.

Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS) affects millions of people worldwide. Originally termed "fibrositis," FMS manifests as chronic discomfort in the body's fibrous tissues: muscles, tendons, ligaments, bursae, and joint capsules.

🌡️ Weather, Stress, and Flare-Ups

Many people living with Fibromyalgia notice their pain escalates during:

  • Cold temperatures & high humidity
  • Sudden weather or seasonal changes
  • Overexertion & emotional stress

Conversely, gentle heat (warm baths, heating pads) and warm weather often provide temporary comfort by calming hyper-reactive soft tissues.

🚨 Commonly Associated Symptoms:

Fibromyalgia isn't just "muscle pain"—it impacts the entire nervous and digestive system:

  • Neurological & Head Pain: Chronic tension headaches, migraines, jaw pain (TMJ), and "brain fog" (cognitive/memory impairment).
  • Sleep & Energy: Persistent fatigue, light-headedness, and restless sleep disorders.
  • Systemic Sensitivity: Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), painful menstruation, and skin/chemical sensitivities.

💡 The Rivers Myoskeletal Approach

Because many structural and postural disorders mimic Fibromyalgia, the first step is determining if underlying joint fixations, nerve entrapments, or muscle atrophy are driving your symptoms.

While medication only attempts to dull the pain signals, gentle, structured manual therapy works to decompress hyper-tonic muscles, improve circulation, and calm a sensitive central nervous system. Restoring natural movement patterns gives your body the chance to recover a higher, pain-free quality of life.

🗣️ What Our Clients Say:

"Late last year I started suffering from chronic pain for more than 2 months—no medication relieved it and I couldn't sleep. Three doctors later, I found Deke at Rivers Myoskeletal. He went straight to the source of my problems by realigning my skeletal structure!"

— Rod D.

Cervical Spinal Stenosis

Neck Stiffness, Numbness, or Tingling? It Might Be Cervical Spinal Stenosis! 🦴⚡

Did you know that the spinal canal in your neck is normally only about 17 to 18 millimetres wide—roughly the size of an Australian 20-cent coin?

When wear and tear, collapsing discs, or bone spurs narrow this space down to 13 millimetres or less, you develop Cervical Spinal Stenosis. If that space shrinks to 10 millimetres, severe compression on the spinal cord occurs, leading to a dangerous condition known as cervical myelopathy.

🚨 The Hidden Risk: Vertebrobasilar Syndrome & Stroke

As world-renowned bodywork expert Dr. Erik Dalton points out, chronic cervical degeneration and joint fixation don't just compress local nerves—they can lead to Vertebrobasilar Insufficiency (VBI).

When structural stress and stenosis compress the vertebral arteries running through the neck, blood flow to the brain drops. Over time, chronic mechanical stress on these delicate vessels significantly increases the risk of arterial tears and strokes!

🧠 Common Symptoms of Spinal Cord & Vessel Pressure:

  • Numbness & Tingling: Radiant pain or pins-and-needles traveling down the arms, hands, or fingers.
  • Loss of Fine Motor Skills: Difficulty buttoning a shirt, holding cutlery, or handwriting.
  • Gait & Balance Issues: Feeling unsteady on your feet or feeling like your legs are "heavy."
  • Neck & Head Tension: Deep, aching neck stiffness with chronic suboccipital headaches or dizziness.

💡 Restoring Spinal Stability Without Surgery

Once spinal cord or arterial compression sets in, masking the pain with drugs won't stop the underlying degeneration.

Having trained in Dr. Erik Dalton’s Myoskeletal Alignment Techniques, Deke at Rivers Myoskeletal applies specialized, non-invasive protocols designed to:

  1. Decompress tight cervical joints and release hyper-tonic neck muscles (like the scalenes and levator scapulae).
  2. Restore proper vertebral spacing and cervical curve alignment.
  3. Improve spinal stability to reduce arterial traction and help prevent long-term neurological damage.

🗣️ What Our Clients Say:

"I have been struggling with an incredibly sore neck for over a year now and within a couple of months of weekly visits I now have much more movement and no pain. I'd recommend Deke to anyone!"

Kyphosis & Lordosis?

Slouching at Your Desk or Arching Your Lower Back? Understanding Kyphosis & Lordosis 🦴⚡

Your spine naturally has gentle curves: a mild outward curve in your upper back (Kyphosis) and an inward curve in your lower back (Lordosis). These curves work together like a natural shock absorber for your body.

However, when modern lifestyle habits push these curves to extremes, your entire posture breaks down:

🚨 The Double Trouble: Hyper-Kyphosis & Hyper-Lordosis

  1. Hyper-Kyphosis ("Dowager's Hump" / Rounded Upper Back): An exaggerated forward rounding of the thoracic spine. Driven heavily today by "Text Neck"—hours spent slouched over computers, phones, or driving—forcing your head forward like an anchor.
  2. Hyper-Lordosis ("Swayback"): An extreme inward pull on the lumbar spine. Often caused by tight hip flexors (iliopsoas), weak glutes, and an anteriorly rotated pelvis pulling your lower back into constant strain.

⚠️ The Chain Reaction: When your upper back rounds forward into hyper-kyphosis, your lower back often compensates by arching deeper into hyper-lordosis to keep your eyes facing straight ahead!

💡 Restoring Your Natural Alignment Without Drugs

Living in constant postural distortion leads to compressed rib cages, shallow breathing, lower back spasms, and chronic tension headaches.

At Rivers Myoskeletal, we don't just tell you to "stand up straight." We perform a thorough structural assessment to release tight, hyper-tonic muscles, decompress joint fixations, and re-balance your pelvis and spine.

🗣️ What Our Clients Say:

"Deke worked hard on me and I felt an immediate difference... In my second session he sorted my chest out. I now have a chest that looks like a man's chest should—previously I was 'squished' in that region. The change is obvious and amazing!"

— Richard L., Brightwater

"After 4 months of barely being able to walk and doctors talking about surgery for bulging discs, Deke worked on getting my hips and back in line. I am now relatively pain-free and back at the gym!"

— Katherine M., Maroochydore
